At St Jude’s we embrace people from all cultural backgrounds and hope to support adults who live locally and wish to improve their English skills. The ESL ministry at St Jude’s has been running for 13 years.

English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for Adults

Our ESL for Adults classes aim to increase confidence and competence in the use of English by providing opportunities to use and enjoy English. The focus of the classes is on language areas that will assist daily life.

When: Thursday 9:30am-11:30am

Where: St Jude’s Anglican Church Parish Centre

Level: Post beginner to Intermediate

Course length: 4 x 8 week courses per year. Each term covers different topics.  Enrolments are welcome at any time.

2016 schedule:

Term 1: 11 February – 31 March

Term 2: 5 May –  23 June

Term 4: 17 October – 9 December

Cost: $20 per term to cover photocopy costs and morning tea

Credential: A certificate of completion is awarded at the end of each term.

Course work:  Students will learn and practise English through grammar exercises, conversation, pronunciation and vocabulary building as well as reading, writing and listening activities. Please bring a notebook.

Class structure:

9.30-10.30     grammar and language

10.30-10.40   morning tea and informal conversation

10.40-11.30   listening and speaking activities and conversation practice

It is important that students arrive on time for class. Arriving late disrupts the concentration of the group and is unfair on the other students. If you are to be late or miss the class, please notify us in advance on 9399 9400 or email

Child minding:
 Child minding is not provided.

Parents with children who wish to practise their English are invited to attend Playgroup on Tuesday morning at 9:30am during School Term.

Classes are led by Terry O’Brien who has worked as a high school English teacher and school principal in NSW.  She has a Cambridge University ESOL Level 5 Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers (Adults) of Other Languages  (CELTA).

Assistant teachers are well experienced in teaching English to people from non English speaking countries.
